Dong Wha Launches “Clzapine” for Treatment of Refractory Schizophrenia

[Date : 2014-01-03]

  • First Refractory Schizophrenia medication to be developed locally
Dong Wha Pharmaceuticals said today that it has launched “Clzapine (clozapine),” the first locally-developed drug used to treat patients with refractory schizophrenia.

Clozapine, the main ingredient of the new drug, has demonstrated superior effects in treatment of refractory schizophrenia, and therefore, is expected to be effectively used for patients with schizophrenia which is often associated with Extra Pyramidal Symptoms (EPS)*. In clinical trials, it also reduced the risk of suicidal behaviors in patients with schizophrenia at increased risk for suicidal behavior or patients with schizoaffective disorder**.

Dong Wha successfully conducted clinical trials in six major hospitals in the country (St. Mary’s Hospital Yeoido, Wonkwang University Hospital, Dongguk University Hospital Gyeongju, Konkook University Hospital Chungju, Seoul National Hospital and Naju National Hospital), demonstrating in-vivo equivalence and efficacy of the drug.

“The launch of Clzapine comes as we have successfully completed clinical trials with rigorous standards in cooperation with major hospitals in the country, developing the country’s first drug in the kind,” said an official at the company.

“Clzapine” tablet is available as 25mg and 100mg, which are offered at KRW211 and KRW551, respectively, under the insurance coverage.

In September 2013, Dong Wha attracted keen attention in the industry, launching LaCor Tablet, the country’s first antihypertensive combination therapy containing fimartsartan. With the launch of “Clzapine” this time, it is expected to establish a solid foothold in the ethical drug market.
